The Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a species of freshwater fish native to southern Asia and is currently well known around the world as a valuable tool in scientific research due to several unique characteristics that distinguish it as an experimental model.

These fish have about 70% genetic similarity to humans , and this percentage rises to 82% when it comes to disease. Up to 5 days after fertilization, these embryos are not considered an animal model, but rather an experimental model, meeting the standards established by the CONCEA Directive. Thus, the Zebrafish model represents a viable alternative that bridges the gap between in vitro and mammalian models, and may lead to a decrease in the number of animals required in subsequent stages of research.
